FULL-TIME RESIDENT SEMINARIANS

ADMISSION INFORMATION

The full-time resident student is a Roman Catholic male who intends to prepare for the celibate priesthood by participation in the seminary program. He needs to furnish the seminary with the following:
  1. Completed application form along with a recent photo
  2. Completed medical form, including official certification of immunization from mumps, measles, rubella, tetanus, meningitis, and diphtheria
  3. Official copy of high school transcripts or GED and official copies of transcripts of all work done at post-secondary institutions
  4. American College Testing (ACT) scores
  5. Requirements of Canon Law must be observed if the applicant has attended another seminary or been a member of a religious community. The applicant will request a letter be sent from the Rector/Superior to the President-Rector of Saint Joseph Seminary College indicating that the applicant left the seminary/religious community in good standing
  6. Criminal Background Check conducted through one's diocese or the seminary
  7. Valid psychological evaluation
  8. Veterans record, if applicable
  9. Foreign student records, if applicable
  10. Student financial aid records, if applicable
  11. Applicants for whom English is not their native language must present valid scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL)
  12. Where practical, interviews will be held by the Admissions Committee
  13. Letter of sponsorship from diocese or religious community.
  14. Completed Canonical Questionnaire (provided by the Seminary College)
  15. If an applicant is not sponsored by a diocese or religious community, he may still seek admission into the seminary college as an unaffiliated seminarian provided he is eligible for admission in accord with the norms of the Roman Catholic Church. By the conclusion of his fourth semester after admission, he must supply the President-Rector with evidence that he is actively seeking sponsorship by a diocese or religious community.
In addition to numbers 1-11 above, he will also have to furnish the seminary with the following:
  1. Recent (within the last six months) certificate of Baptism and certificate of Confirmation
  2. Four Letters of Recommendation:
    • From the applicant's pastor
    • From a priest acquainted with the applicant
    • From a school official or employer
    • From a reference acquainted with but not related to the applicant
  3. An autobiography (not to exceed 10 pages) describing:
    1. Chronological history of life of applicant
    2. Relationships with the applicant's family and other significant people in his life
    3. Social life
    4. School achievement
    5. Faith and prayer life with a description of the applicant's discernment process
    6. Work experience
    7. Reasons why the applicant is applying to Saint Joseph Seminary College
  4. Completed Canonical Questionnaire (provided by the Seminary College)
  5. Signed Financial Responsibility Form
Once the above above-mentioned forms are received, the Admissions Committee will conduct a personal interview on campus.

ENTRANCE REQUIREMENTS - Full-time Resident Students

Candidates for the freshman year and transfer students must present evidence of graduation from an approved secondary school and proof of ability to follow the curriculum of the Seminary College by satisfying the following criteria:
  1. Completion of approved pre-college curriculum, as certified by an official transcript. A preferred record includes success in a minimum of seventeen academic units of high school credit, normally including at least:
    • 3 units of English
    • 2 units of Science
    • 2 units of Mathematics
    • 1 unit of United States History
    • 2 units of Foreign Language
    • Additional units in English, a second foreign language, social science and mathematics.
    • Applicants who do not have these units may be required to take certain developmental courses in order to be able to participate in the Seminary College curriculum.
  2. Presentation of American College Test (ACT) results. The Admissions Committee reviews these scores together with an analysis of the applicants high school record. The Saint Joseph Seminary College ACT identification number is 1604.
  3. In addition to the above, applicants for whom English is a second language must show a proficiency in English adequate for college level study by taking and receiving a satisfactory score on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). If taking the computer-based test, the applicant must score in the range of 190. If taking the paper-based test, the applicant must score in the range of 520. The Saint Joseph Seminary College TOEFL identification number is 6689. Additional testing options may be required by the Office of Admissions.
Candidates for advanced standing may be admitted to Saint Joseph Seminary College from other colleges of recognized standing upon the submission of formal application.
