2020 - 2021 Faculty Accomplishments

Dr. Daniel Burns

Dr. Burns published a chapter in a book by the Institute of Priestly Formation titled, A True and Mature Obedience: Seminary Formation and Freedom. The name of the chapter is "The Limits of Self-Sacrificial love: Ecclesiastical Obedience in the Theology of Hans Urs von Balthasar."

Dr. Burns was invited by the Diocese of Biloxi to teach theology in their Permanent Diaconate program. One Saturday a month since last January is given to that program.

Mr. Ben Frederick

Mr. Frederick collaborated in organizing an informal association of Catholic seminary music directors from across the country. This is the first initiative of its kind. The panel discussions are held over Zoom with the aim of developing pedagogical standards for music in houses seminary formation.

Fr. Damian Hinojosa, PhD

Fr. Damian spoke at the following conference:

Fr. Damian received a certification in Online Teaching, Quality Matters, in September 2020.

Fr. William Farge, S.J.

Fr. William had two books published:

  1. For the German Institute for Japanese Studies at Sophia University, Tokyo: Christian Sorcerers on Trial: Records of the 1827 Osaka Incident (New York: Columbia University Press, 2020) by Fumiko Miyazaki.

  2. For the journal Japanese Studies: The Land We Saw, the Times We Knew: An Anthology of Zuihitsu Writing from Early Modern Japan (University of Hawaii Press, 2019) by Gerald Groemer.

Dr. Daniel Burns

Dr. Burns completed a chapter for the book, Priestly Formation on Ecclesiastical Obedience in the theology of Hans Urs von Balthasar.


Mr. Ben Frederick

In Fall 2019, the Schola Cantorum of Saint Joseph Seminary College released a long-awaited album of sacred music entitled, “Journey Through Holy Week.”

In addition to providing music for seminary and abbey liturgies, Mr. Frederick and the Schola have offered community outreach performances, including a chamber music concert in Rouquette Library and a vocal music program at St. Anthony’s Gardens retirement community.


Fr. Damian Hinojosa, PhD

Fr. Damian edited the book, Trinity in the Life of the Church, written by Fr. Peter Hammet, OSB.

He was a recipient of a federal grant for St. Joseph College in collaboration with North Shore Technical College for the purpose of providing ESL, ELA and Citizenship classes for two semesters on the North Shore.

He was a panelist for "Collaborate" at the Online Learning Consortium Conference held at Ashford University in San Diego, California last June.

He directed the retreat “Matrimony: Sacrament of Enduring Love” at the Christian Life Center this past August.

Fr. Damian delivered a talk at the L.U. Conference titled, “Affordable Learning and the Return on Investment Using OERs at Private Colleges," at the Pennington Biomedical Research Center in Baton Rouge in October.

In December, he delivered a five-day conference at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church titled, “The Word Incarnate / El Verbo Encarnado”.


Fr. Matthew Clark

On July 26th, 2019, at Notre Dame Seminary in New Orleans, Father Matthew gave a lecture for CLE units to the St. Thomas More Society of New Orleans (Catholic lawyers association) entitled: “Moral Conscience and the Civil Law in the Catholic Tradition.”


Fr. William Farge, S.J.

Fr. Farge wrote a book review of an anthology of 16th and 17th century Japanese essays to be published in the Journal of Japanese Studies.


Fr. Jonathan Wallis

Fr. Wallis was promoted to Knight Commander in the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. He was also a Region X Priest-Observer at the USCCB General Assembly.


2018 - 2019 Faculty Accomplishments

Dr. Geoffrey Bain

Dr. Bain completed a Graduate Certificate in Christian Wisdom from Holy Apostles College and Seminary.


Dr. Daniel Burns

In September, Dr. Burns attended a symposium for formators at the Institute of Priestly Formation at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska. He presented a paper entitled "College Seminary: A Defense." This paper will be published as a chapter in a book to come out later this year by IPF with the title Priestly Formation and Integrative Healing.

This past January, Dr. Burns was invited to give a talk on theological gender differentiation titled "Love Written in Our DNA: Man and Woman in God's Plan" at St. Alphonsus Parish in Baton Rouge.


Mr. Robert Calmes

Mr. Calmes established the St. Joseph Review and re-established the long-dormant St. Ben Newsletter.


Mr. Ben Frederick

In December 2018, Mr. Frederick presented a Sacred Music concert at the Abbey Church in conjunction with the Schola Cantorum and local guest musicians. The program, titled "Mystical Songs and Heavenly Sounds," featured Mr. Frederick on trumpet and voice.

In January 2019, Mr. Frederick was a featured guest musician at a concert of Sacred Classics given at St. Peter Parish in Covington.


Dr. Jenny Heil

Dr. Heil gave a workshop for the New Orleans School of Contemplative Living, which is an ecumenical group, related to the topic of a talk she will give for the Notre Dame Lay Enrichment Series in May 2019 titled "Learning to Read as Prayer without Ceasing."

  • Grant recipient from the Board of Regents of the State of Louisiana to Acquire Literary Theory from Oxford University Press, for use in online and in class World Literature courses, December, 2018.

  • Grant recipient from the SAGE eBook program in conjunction with the Board of Regents for the acquisition of eBooks for Undergraduate Research, July, 2018.

  • Grant recipient from LOUIS and the Board of Regents for the acquisition of eBooks for World Literature IV, January, 2018.
